I know we’ve talked about invitations being preserved as keepsakes, but what about the bouquets? Or even better, combining both. And let’s not forget about preserving boutonnieres! Today on the blog, I’m so excited to share a conversation with Andrea from Designs by Andrea, a floral preservation artist who freezes a moment in time by preserving your wedding flowers. So if you ever thought about doing the traditional bouquet toss, I’m here to say: maybe skip that one.
Andrea’s passion for preserving memories shines through in every stem she carefully preserves. What makes her work stand out even more is how she masterfully incorporates wedding invitations into her creations, resulting in pieces that carry both meaning and memory well beyond the day itself.
In this interview, Andrea shares her process, her favorite florals to work with, and why stationery and blooms make the perfect pair when it comes to encapsulating your wedding day or any other special occasion for that matter.
What inspired you to start preserving florals, and how did you develop your technique?
I fell in love with flower preservation after learning that his late grandmother used to press flowers in books. After receiving a bouquet from my now-husband in 2016, I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing the flowers away, and that curiosity turned into an obsession with finding a way to keep my flowers forever. Over the years, I developed and refined my own preservation methods through years of experimentation, study, and a relentless focus on quality. Today, my team and I use proprietary techniques to preserve each bloom with integrity, detail, and design in mind.
How do you decide which flowers are best suited for preservation, and how do you maintain their beauty over time?
We assess each flower based on its structure, color, and condition when they arrive. While some flowers are better suited for pressing, others for 3D preservation, we have experimented with all types of flora and have adapted different techniques depending on the type of preservation we are doing for a client. Today, we use up to seven different preservation techniques depending on the bloom (and even specific parts of the bloom) — and combine them with high-end materials that ensure they remain beautiful for decades. All our flowers are color-restored (hand-painted) and reshaped to get a close match the way the flowers looked when they were fresh. It’s a delicate blend of art and science.
Can you preserve any type of floral, or are there certain flowers that work better for preservation? Are there any flowers you recommend avoiding?
Most flowers can be preserved with the right technique, though some naturally preserve better/more consistently than others. Roses, orchids, and peonies are excellent flowers for both pressed pieces and 3D preservation. Extremely delicate or translucent flowers like ranunculus, dahlias, tulips and lilies can be more challenging, though we have different techniques to strengthen even the most fragile petals.
If someone is trying to DIY a pressed piece for the first time, I would recommend selecting flowers that have thicker petals, but avoid the ones that retain a lot of water (roses, hydrangea, peonies are great candidates!). If you are hiring a company that specializes in flower preservation, you shouldn’t have to worry about your flower selection, as it’s our job is to make a beautiful piece of art, regardless of the types of flower you want to incorporate into your bouquet.

How long does the process of preserving florals typically take, and what steps are involved in making them into a lasting keepsake?
From start to finish, our process takes an average of four to six months, which is about 50% faster than industry-standard. That includes drying, having a design consultation with our clients, reshaping and color-restoring their flowers, designing, assembling, and sealing the final piece. Each order takes us around 30 hours of hands-on work, because we believe your flowers deserve nothing less than heirloom-level care and attention.
How do you ensure the flowers maintain their beauty and color after preservation?
Our proprietary Flower Beautification™ Process involves over 200 steps to restore your flowers’ original shape and color. We’ve spent years perfecting techniques that revive dulled or browned petals, bringing them back to life and preserving their beauty for years to come. Each piece is crafted using only the highest acid-free materials, museum-grade frames, and UV-protective finishes to ensure long-term vibrancy and clarity.
How have you combined preserved florals with wedding invitations in the past, and how do these elements work together to create something special or tell a couple’s story?
Wedding invitations are such a beautiful extension of a couple’s personality and their big celebration; incorporating them into a preserved piece adds a huge storytelling element. To be frank, I didn’t understand why people would want to add their invitation to their piece, until my husband and I were designing our own wedding invitation, and it was a huge representation of what the wedding day would look like, and also our personalities. For the couples that spend a lot of time and love crafting their invitation, I now definitely encourage it!
There’s different ways to add your invitations to your preservation pieces. We’ve framed invitations alongside pressed flowers, floated monograms over preserved arrangements in shadow boxes, and even embedded invitation details into resin blocks. When done right, it’s more than décor, it becomes a legacy piece – and the best conversation piece in your home!
What role do wedding invitations play in your floral preservation process, do they influence the choice of flowers or the arrangement itself?
They certainly do! The design, fonts, colors, and textures of the invitation often influence the background color, matting style, framing, and also the way the flowers are arranged. If a bride had a minimalist invitation, we might echo that aesthetic in the floral design. If it was romantic and ornate, we’ll often reflect that same drama and movement in how we arrange the blooms, along with a vintage Italian frame – the possibilities are endless! It’s all about harmony, and the invitation sets the tone on how the piece should be designed. We truly like to honor the work of the custom stationer designer.
What advice do you have for couples who want to incorporate their wedding invitation into their floral preservation?
I originally planned to send digital invitations for our micro-wedding, but my husband insisted on sending something tangible, saying that the invitation is the book cover of your wedding day. He was right! The moment our guests received it, the excitement was real. We got so many messages saying how stunning it was… thick, elegant, and just completely unexpected – it truly painted the story of what our wedding day was going to look like. I now encourage every couple to invest in their invitations due to my experience.

¿Qué te inspiró a empezar a preservar flores y cómo desarrollaste tu técnica?
Me enamoré de la preservación floral cuando supe que la abuela de mi marido solía prensar flores en libros. Después de recibir un ramo de mi ahora esposo en 2016, no soportaba la idea de tirarlo a la basura, y esa curiosidad se convirtió en una obsesión por encontrar la manera de conservar mis flores para siempre. Hemos experimentado con todo tipo de flores y adaptamos nuestras técnicas según el tipo de preservación que hacemos para cada cliente. Hoy en día utilizamos hasta siete técnicas distintas, incluso dentro de una misma flor, dependiendo de qué parte estemos preservando. También trabajamos con materiales de alta calidad para garantizar que sigan viéndose hermosas durante décadas. ¿Se pueden preservar todo tipo de flores, o hay algunas que funcionan mejor? ¿Hay alguna que recomiendes evitar?

¿Cuánto tiempo tarda el proceso y qué pasos están involucrados para convertirlas en una pieza duradera?
De principio a fin, nuestro proceso toma en promedio de cuatro a seis meses, lo que es aproximadamente un 50 % más rápido que el estándar de la industria. Esto incluye el secado, una consulta de diseño con el cliente, la restauración de color y forma de las flores, el diseño, montaje y sellado de la pieza final. Cuando se hace bien, no es solo decoración: se convierte en una pieza con legado y una gran conversación en casa.
¿Qué papel juegan las invitaciones dentro del proceso? ¿Influyen en el arreglo floral?
¡Definitivamente! El diseño, las tipografías, los colores y texturas de la invitación muchas veces nos inspiran al elegir el fondo, el estilo de enmarcado, y también en cómo organizamos las flores. Si una novia tuvo una invitación minimalista, reflejamos eso con un arreglo más limpio. Si fue una invitación romántica y ornamentada, solemos reflejar ese drama y movimiento en el arreglo floral, a veces con un marco italiano vintage. Todo se trata de armonía, y la invitación marca el tono de diseño. Nos encanta honrar el trabajo del diseñador de papelería.
¿Qué consejo darías a las parejas que quieren incluir su invitación en la preservación floral?
Originalmente planeaba enviar invitaciones digitales para nuestra boda íntima, pero mi esposo insistió en enviar algo tangible. Me dijo que la invitación es la portada del libro de tu boda.
