Five Years of Ink, Paper, and Purpose

There’s a unique rhythm to designing for letterpress that only truly clicks when you step behind the press. Before I became a letterpress printer, I approached design purely from a visual standpoint—focused on layout, typography, and balance on a screen. But letterpress has a way of humbling you, teaching you that the best designs aren’t just about how they look and what they represent, but how they interact with paper, ink, and pressure.
The first time I pulled a print, I realized how much I had been missing. There’s a patience and precision required in printing that shifted the way I think about design. Suddenly, spacing and line weight weren’t just aesthetic choices, but technical considerations. I started designing with the press in mind, making choices that worked with the medium rather than against it. And in return, becoming a designer first made me a more thoughtful printer—one who understands the importance of intention behind every detail.
It’s baffling to think that Bodega Press is turning five today. What began as a small dream to spend less time behind the screen grew into something more meaningful than I ever imagined.
Of course, my story with letterpress began before that—quiet mornings at the press, small experiments, moments of pure frustration and unexpected delight. But these past five years mark the moment I officially gave that love a name, a space, and a purpose.
One of the biggest lessons it’s taught me is restraint. Unlike digital design, where you can use an unlimited number of colors and effects, I often letterpress with one or two, sometimes three. This limitation has forced me to become a better problem solver, focusing on contrast, texture, and composition to create impact. Negative space has become one of my favorite design tools—it’s not just empty space, but an active part of the composition that gives the design room to breathe.
I also learned to be much more thoughtful with color. Letterpress ink isn’t opaque—it layers, absorbs, and sometimes surprises you, especially when printed on colored paper. Over time, I’ve developed a better sense of how certain pigments will interact with different stocks, how to achieve a subtle tone-on-tone or a bold pop depending on the pairing. Playing with those interactions has become one of the most rewarding parts of the process.
And really, that’s what these last five years have been about—finding creative solutions within constraints. Trusting the process. Trying to let go of perfection and making room for the unexpected. Through it all, there’s one thing that’s never changed: the joy I feel when I pull an impression. The day that no longer outweighs the challenges—that’s the day I hang up my apron. But so far, that joy still wins. Every time.
Letterpress has deepened my appreciation for the craft, making me a more intentional designer and a more patient printer. And at the heart of it all, it’s made me fall even more in love with the tangible beauty of ink on paper.
I wouldn’t be here without the clients who trusted me, the friends who cheered me on, and the community who believed in the magic of slow, thoughtful design. Thank you for being part of this story.
And as I look toward what’s next, I have dreams of sharing this craft even more deeply. One day, in the near future I’d love to teach letterpress properly—pass it on the way it was passed to me, through patience, curiosity, and a deep love of paper. But even as I dream of teaching, I’m excited for the continued opportunity to work with clients who share that same passion for the craft, people who see the magic in paper and want to create something meaningful together.

Cinco años de papel, tinta y propósito
Hay un ritmo único al diseñar para letterpress que solo se entiende de verdad cuando te pones detrás de la prensa. Antes de convertirme en impresora, abordaba el diseño desde un punto de vista puramente visual—enfocándome en la composición, la tipografía y el equilibrio en pantalla. Pero el letterpress tiene una forma muy particular de ponerte en tu lugar, de enseñarte que los mejores diseños no se tratan solo de cómo se ven y lo que representa, sino de cómo interactúan con el papel, la tinta y la presión.
La primera vez que tiré una impresión, me di cuenta de todo lo que me había estado perdiendo. Hay una paciencia y una precisión necesarias en la impresión que cambiaron por completo mi forma de pensar sobre el diseño. De pronto, el espaciado y el grosor de línea no eran solo decisiones estéticas, sino consideraciones técnicas. Empecé a diseñar pensando en la prensa, tomando decisiones que funcionaran con el medio y no en su contra. Y, a cambio, haber sido diseñadora primero me convirtió en una impresora más consciente—una que entiende la importancia de la intención detrás de cada detalle.
Me cuesta creer que Bodega Press cumple cinco años hoy. Lo que empezó como un pequeño sueño de pasar menos tiempo frente a la pantalla se convirtió en algo mucho más significativo de lo que jamás imaginé.
Claro que mi historia con el letterpress comenzó antes—mañanas tranquilas frente a la prensa, pequeños experimentos, momentos de pura frustración y alegría inesperada. Pero estos cinco años marcan el momento en el que decidí ponerle nombre a ese amor, darle un espacio y una intención.
Una de las lecciones más importantes que me ha dado es la contención. A diferencia del diseño digital, donde puedes usar una cantidad ilimitada de colores y efectos, muchas veces imprimo con uno o dos colores, a veces tres. Esta limitación me ha obligado a ser mejor resolviendo problemas, enfocándome en el contraste, la textura y la composición para lograr impacto. El espacio en blanco se ha convertido en una de mis herramientas favoritas de diseño—no es solo un espacio vacío, sino una parte activa de la composición que le da aire al diseño.
También aprendí a ser mucho más intencional con el color. La tinta de letterpress no es opaca—se superpone, se absorbe y a veces te sorprende, especialmente cuando se imprime sobre papeles de color. Con el tiempo, he desarrollado un mejor sentido de cómo ciertos pigmentos interactúan con diferentes tipos de papel, cómo lograr un tono sobre tono sutil o un contraste fuerte dependiendo del dúo. Jugar con esas combinaciones se ha convertido en una de las partes más gratificantes del proceso.
Y en realidad, de eso se han tratado estos cinco años: de encontrar soluciones creativas dentro de las limitaciones. De confiar en el proceso. De intentar soltar la perfección y dejar espacio para lo inesperado. Y si algo no ha cambiado en todo este tiempo, es la alegría que siento al sacar una impresión. El día que eso ya no pese más que los desafíos, será el día en que cuelgue el delantal. Pero, por ahora, esa alegría sigue ganando. Siempre.
El letterpress ha profundizado mi aprecio por el oficio, haciéndome una diseñadora más intencional y una impresora más paciente. Y en el centro de todo, me ha hecho enamorarme aún más de la belleza tangible de la tinta sobre el papel.
